Google Calendar apparently added one of those intent-predicting features. If you create an event titled "In ___" it will automatically insert "___" as the location for the event.

Of course, I found this out by penciling in the date of an In Flames concert, and going "whaaaa..?" when my location was filled in as "Flames".

Support an open debate format.

Californians: No on Prop 8. No matter which way you would vote on this matter, please make sure you do get out there and VOTE. Sometimes in a state like California you might feel that there's no need to show up to the presidential election, because you know which way your state is voting with or without you (and thousands of your buddies). But on this very important matter the state is split, and every vote counts. This is a proposition to change our state constitution. Even if you don't personally know anyone who'll be affected by it, a change to the state constitution should not be made lightly. Vote.

Today is a good day for capitalism.
  • Short-sighted ridiculously expensive ill-thought bailout plan fails
  • Citi buys Wachovia
  • Bain and H&F are purchasing Lehman assets
  • SpaceX does privately funded orbital flight (yesterday)

I'm sure they'll do plenty to disillusion me later, but, as with capitalism, one has to take both the ups and the downs.

One thing I really love about modern programs with any sort of calendar element: I get to choose the day the week starts. No longer do I have to put up with some of my calendars starting on Monday and some starting on Sunday, depending on what country developed them. No longer do I have to scan opposite ends of two different lines to find out what I'm up to on a particular weekend (which is the majority of my calendar usage). Fabulous!

This is one of the more visually interesting Google Maps mashups I've seen: OnionMap, a sort of tourist guide map (to popular tourist cities only), highlighting points of interest based on category. They don't appear to be very far along, but you definitely get the idea from what they have so far.

Go to http://quotationspage.com/random.php3 and read until you find five quotes that speak your truth. Find five Doctor Who quotes that "speak your truth". (I got really bored wading through the quotes on that site; these are easier to wade through, especially since I knew several to look for).

Like [info]avani, I actually grabbed six.

Doctor 1: A rash action is worse than no action at all.

Sarah: Doctor, are you serious?
Doctor 3: About what I do, yes. Not necessarily the way I do it.

Brigadier: Do you know what you're doing?
Doctor 3: My dear chap, I can't wait to find out.

Doctor 4: To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable; only unexplained.

Doctor 4: First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Doctor 4: You and I are scientists, Professor. We buy our privilege to experiment at the cost of total responsibility.

In addition to the amusing title, the methodology is nice (diagrams included!), though no better than other solutions I've seen. This particular line of research is surprisingly still fairly unexplored.

A brake is a device for stopping motion. To brake is to utilize such a device. (Scroll down for "brake" rather than "break".)

A break is a rest period, or a fracture. To break is to cause a separation, or to take a rest. This also has other definitions: waves break, you can break wind, break up with someone, break out in song, etc.

A compliment is an expression of regard, favor, etc.

A complement is what is required to create or complete a whole. In geometry the complement of an angle A is the angle B such that A + B is 90 degrees. When dealing with sets, the complement of a set A is all the stuff in the domain that is not in A.

A levee is a barrier intended to contain the flow of water.

A levy is a tax or fine, usually against an item or act, or as the result of a legal judgment. To levy is to impose a levy, or you can levy troops.
